Why Direct Sales?

Yeah, I know. It's been a while. You see, I'm not really much of a writer. I have the gift of gab, it's just hard for me to put my thoughts into an eloquent article. But, I had this enlightening moment and I figured, I'd run with it.

So, Direct Sales? Isn't that like a pyramid scheme. Let me begin by saying, "NO"!!!! And that's a big, fat one. Direct sales or MLM's aren't pyramid schemes. No one is asking for your money with nothing in return except an empty promise. Direct Sales is actually a great business model. The company doesn't have to pay any of the insurance or Workers Comp associated with employees. They pay out on a commission basis and get the income. On the other hand, as an independent consultant, you don't have a boss telling you what to do and when to do it. It is your business. Now, with this model (and every company is different), your pay increases as you grow a team. If someone signs up under you, it is your responsibility to train that person and be there for him/her to answer any questions and help them achieve their goal. Does this always happen? No. But, you make your own business yours and you move forward.

So what is so appealing about Direct Sales? I joined because my daughter wanted to be part of Origami Owl's Owlette program. This is a program where youth ages 11 - 17 can work alongside a mentor and learn how to run a business, as well as develop social and professional skills. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to share something with my daughter, while preparing her for the business world. And, she gets to make some money too! But aside from this, direct sales allows a person freedom. Freedom to work as much or as little as you want. Freedom to decide how you want to market yourself. Freedom to take a day off to spend with your family without having to call in to anyone. Freedom to be a stay-at-home mom and make some money to help support your household.

There are many reasons why people join Direct Sales companies. They may like the product and becoming a consultant provides them with wholesale pricing which will save them money in the long run, especially if they will be using the product consistently. They may want to engage in a social setting and make new friendships. I have a whole new set of O2 (Origami Owl) friends that I have made throughout these past 2 years. Not only that, but friends in other direct sales companies. And thirdly, they may just want to make some money.

And how does this work? Well, depending on the company, you usually buy a starter kit. So, with Origami Owl as an example, for $99 you get $300 worth of jewelry and marketing essentials to get your business going along with your dedicated website. Remember, you're getting something (not like a pyramid scheme where you get nothing). Now, what you do with that kit is up to you. You can begin to work your business and grow your customer base and hold jewelry bars and grow your team. Or, you can keep the sparkles and whenever you see a product you like, you can purchase at a discount. You can share your website with your friends and family and they can purchase at their leisure. And if you do make it a business, you'll get paid your commission weekly and that's how you make some money. You decide what you want to do and when you want to do it. And that's the beauty of it all. The independence that comes with entrepreneurship!
