Tell someone you are with a Direct Sales or MLM (Multi Level Marketing) company and the first thing they think of is, "Oh, isn't that like a pyramid scheme?" Plain and simply, no, it's not. I can't speak for other companies, but I can speak for my own, Origami Owl.
According to the FTC, a pyramid scheme promises consumers or investors large profits based primarily on recruiting others to join their program, not based on profits from any real investment or real sale of goods to the public. With a Direct Sales company like Origami Owl, any money you make is commission from a product sold, whether it be ordered from your website or you selling the actual product in person.
To become part of a Direct Sales company, you usually purchase a kit (again, you are paying for actual product). Sometimes, there are free or discounted join specials, but you are receiving something in return, whether it be product or your own dedicated shopping site. From there, you make money from your sales and as you add consultants to your team (if you so wish to become a sponsor and mentor new consultants). There is a career plan, and of course, the higher you move up, the more money you can make (just like in any corporate job). Basically, as a consultant in a direct sales company, you are an independent contractor and your salary is commission based. You are your own boss and you work as much or as little as you want, depending on what your goal may be.
